I call out people who I find extremely disrespectful to the fact that people with EDs are suffering from a serious and fatal mental illness. If you find that disgusting it’s your own opinion and you are entitled to it.

“Wana” is short for “Wanarexic”. The definition is on the Info page, but I’ll paste it here:

Wanarexic/Fauxlimic: Want to develop an Eating Disorder in order to lose weight.

The “Bitch” part is pretty much self-explanatory. 

“Stop glamorizing eating disorders.”

Not once have I ever or will I ever glamorize EDs. I’d like you to point out where you feel I have done so, and I would gladly rectify/remove it. There is nothing good, nothing “cool”, nothing fun about having an ED. It has ruined many of my relationships and other parts of my life, and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. 

Also, there are several entries in my blog that point to sites that I think should be reported and banned from the internet entirely. I’ve even posted clear instructions on how to report blogs on Tumblr as well as prettythin.com which is a site that does actively promote and encourage EDs. Quite honestly I don’t know where you’re coming from with this one.

There is a weight requirement for someone to be diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa. I didn’t make that up, it’s in the DSM-IV (Diagnosticand Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In case you don’t know what that is, it’s what psychiatrists and psychologists use to diagnose patients in North America. The World Health Organization has their own version which ALSO has a weight requirement for AN, the same one, and that’s in theICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems). 

I’m providing you with links to both of them in case you think I’m making this shit up. 

Here is the diagnostic criteria for Anorexia Nervosa in the current DSM-IV:

A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected; or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).

B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.

C. Disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight. 

D. In postmenarcheal females, amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles. 

Type: Restricting Type vs. Binge-Eating/Purging Type.

You must meet ALL the above criteria to be diagnosed with AN (although the criteria in D is subject to debate and will likely be removed with the upcoming fifth edition of the DSM which is scheduled to come out in March 2013). 

“85% ideal body weight for age and height” is a BMI of 17,5. So “failure to maintain” would be a BMI of 17,4 or less.

I am NOT anorexic. I have ED-NOS (which I will clarify in a moment), and I do NOT wish to be anorexic. The whole reason this blog exists is because some fucking idiot people that want to shed a few pounds think that they can “borrow” anorexia for a few months until they “look good in that bikini” and then they can go back to eating normally. THESE PEOPLE (Wanarexics) are the people being attacked in my blog. THEY are the ones who think EDs are glamorous, cool, a quick fix, a lifestyle, etc. 

Back to the topic of ED-NOS; here is the diagnostic criteria:

1 For females, all the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa are met except that the individual has regular menses.

2 All the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa are met except that, despite significant weight loss, the individual’s current weight is in the normal range.

3 All the criteria for Bulimia Nervosa are met except that the binge eating and inappropriate compensatory mechanisms occur at a frequency of less than twice a week or for a duration of less than 3 months.

4 The regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviour by an individual of normal body weight after eating small amounts of food (e.g. self-induced vomiting after the consumption of two biscuits.

5 Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not swallowing, large amounts of food.

6 Binge-eating disorder: recurrent episodes of binge eating in the absence of the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviours characteristic of Bulimia Nervosa.

For ED-NOS, you don’t have to meet the criteria but only ONE of the above criteria. As you can see in point two, it describes people who do NOT meet the weight loss requirement for AN. 

This DOES NOT mean it is not an ED. This DOES NOT mean that it is not serious. In many cases, ED-NOS can in fact be more serious than AN because it goes undetected for longer and the damage can be greater. 

I won’t lie; it does kind of upset me when I get things like this in my inbox. I get it, though. People see me post about how someone’s BMI doesn’t meet the AN weight requirement and they think I’m saying “You don’t have an Eating Disorder” or “You don’t matter”. 

I can assure you this is absolutely not the case. ALL EDs are serious, and ALL can be fatal. I have had an ED for 9 years. It has shifted from Bulimia Nervosa to sub-threshold ED-NOS to Purging Disorder to Atypical Anorexia. I have never met the weight requirement for AN. 80% of the people I know with EDs are not anorexic and never have been. It makes me angry that society thinks that anorexia is the only “important” ED. That bulimia is portrayed as “gross” and that ED-NOS isn’t even talked about. 

I think it’s important to make people aware of what their ED is. People who get mad because I tell them their BMI doesn’t meet the weight requirement for anorexia are clearly putting in on a pedestal; they think I’m saying “you’re not good enough to be anorexic”. That is very dangerous thinking, and that’s something that needs to be stopped. People need to recognize how serious EDs actually are. They need to stop trivializing them as a fad or a diet, and start seeing the broader ED spectrum that extends from anorexia to binge eating disorder and all the in-betweens. 

I don’t want you to think I’m trying to patronize you or diminish your views in any way. It’s true that I hope you’ve simply misunderstood or misjudged me, but I don’t expect you to respond or anything. I’m actually very happy that you didn’t make yourself anonymous because that shows that you’re not a coward, that you are confident in your opinion and that’s very respectable. I’m also not asking for you to agree with me, or the DSM (I certainly don’t), or my blog. But I do hope that you took the time to read this, at least, and that maybe you will be more educated on EDs because of it. Maybe you don’t care… that’s fine too. 

I’m posting this publicly in case anyone else wants to look into those links or has questions.

This girl wrote one post on the forum (not even an intro) and told everyone on the forum she was here for tips (to get an eating disorder). So did she think she was going to stay or was even welcomed? 

As a good administrator I banned her account and sent her an e-mail explaining why she was banned.

Looking at the picture she posted (noticably her face and arms) I am very positive she even lied about her stats.
